You look carefully at something in the world
You give your eyes and brain ample time to slowly and carefully examine what’s in front you. You don’t rush to the “doing” phase.
Micro Challenge: Blind Contour Drawing
Find an interesting object, like a stick or a toy. Pretend you’re an ant crawling along the surface of the object. Draw every bump you see without looking at your paper. Don’t pick your marker up. Only look at the object.
You notice things others miss
You listen to observations made by others, but continue to examine closely, knowing there’s always more to see and understand.
Micro Challenge: Da Vinci’s Microscope
Make a frame out of a an index card or half sheet of paper by cutting a 2”x3” rectangle out of the middle. Hold the frame close to an object, the draw and sketch the details of that view. What do you notice?
You search for clues about a work’s meaning
When analyzing someone’s work, you know that every detail holds meaning. You try to notice the big elements and little details, making connections to better understand the big idea or larger meaning.

View close up images of everyday objects and try to guess what they are. Explain the clues that helped you identify your answer.
